Preparing people and society for a future arriving faster than our institutions can adapt.
The Frontier Institute for Applied Futures is an independent nonprofit focused on understanding the impact of accelerating technology and turning emerging innovation into practical approaches that elevate human experience and sustain the Earth.
Technology is accelerating. Human systems are not.
Artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, biotechnology and other emerging technologies are advancing at extraordinary speed. Yet education, public policy, workforce systems, corporate governance and social institutions often change slowly.
That growing gap creates both enormous opportunity and significant risk. The challenge is no longer simply inventing new technology. It is helping people, organizations and communities understand what is coming, prepare for it and use it responsibly.
We believe the most important question of the next generation is not what technology can do, but how humanity chooses to apply it.
Every effort we pursue must do three things.
Elevate Human Experience
Technology should improve human capability, dignity, opportunity, health, learning, work and quality of life.
Be Climate Forward
Innovation should recognize the realities of climate change and contribute to a more resilient, sustainable and habitable future.
Apply Emerging Technology
We focus on technologies capable of creating meaningful real-world change, including AI, embodied intelligence, quantum technologies and biohybrid systems.
Research. Convene. Experiment. Build.
The Institute brings together technologists, researchers, educators, policymakers, business leaders and communities to explore consequential emerging technologies and translate foresight into action.
Horizon 2044
Our flagship effort examines how accelerating technology may reshape human life, work, education, institutions and the planet over the 18 years leading to 2044, and what we should begin doing now to prepare.
Explore Horizon 2044 →Applied Futures Research
We explore emerging areas including embodied AI, quantum technology, biohybrid systems and other innovations approaching meaningful societal impact.
Explore Our Work →A frontier has always been a place where possibility becomes reality.
Colorado combines science, technology, aerospace, energy, climate research, higher education, entrepreneurship and a culture of experimentation. It is an ideal place to explore how emerging technologies can move from possibility to responsible, practical application.
The Institute is rooted in Colorado, but the questions we are addressing are global.
The future is arriving whether we are ready or not.
Our job is to help make sure that humanity is not simply reacting to technological change, but actively shaping what comes next.
