Horizon 2044

Designing today for the first truly AI-native generation.

2044 is our planning horizon. Children being born during today's mass adoption of artificial intelligence will grow up never knowing a world without intelligent systems. By 2044, the first of this generation will begin entering adulthood, higher education, the trades, the workforce and civic life.

They will not be adapting to an AI world. They will have been born into one.

Why 2044?

2044 is when the first truly AI-native generation begins to come of age.

The widespread adoption of generative AI in the early 2020s marks a profound shift. A child born now may grow up with artificial intelligence embedded in nearly every part of life, including learning, creativity, healthcare, communication, transportation, entertainment and work.

By approximately 2044, those children will be reaching adulthood as the first truly AI-native generation, for whom interacting with artificial intelligence may feel no more unusual than using electricity or the internet does today.

2044 is not a prediction. It is a planning horizon that gives us one generation to ask what must change now so the people growing up alongside AI can thrive.

The Question

What must we change today to create a world in which the first truly AI-native generation can thrive?

Horizon 2044 is the Frontier Institute for Applied Futures' flagship effort to examine that question. We focus on the gap between technological acceleration and human adaptation, and on the choices that can help society shape change rather than simply react to it.

The children entering adulthood in 2044 will inherit the decisions we make now.
What This Changes

The challenge is much bigger than the future of work.

Human Experience

How will childhood, learning, identity, relationships, creativity, health, accessibility, work and human agency change when intelligent systems are part of everyday life from birth?

Institutions

How must education, government, business, law and governance evolve when technology changes faster than the systems designed to prepare, protect and support people?

Planet

How can emerging technologies help create a more resilient, sustainable world rather than accelerating consumption, inequality and environmental pressure?

One Generation. Eighteen Years. Extraordinary Change.

The road to 2044 starts now.

2022-2026 The Inflection Point

Generative AI moves from research labs and specialized applications into everyday human life.

2026 The First Truly AI-Native Generation

Children are born into a world where intelligent systems are already part of the environment around them.

2030s The Great Adaptation

Education, work, healthcare, government and culture confront accelerating changes in technology and human capability.

2044 The Horizon

The first truly AI-native generation begins entering adulthood and starts shaping institutions, workplaces and society.

Three Lenses

What kind of future are we designing?

Elevate Human Experience

We ask how technology can expand human capability, dignity, opportunity, health, learning, creativity, meaningful work and quality of life.

Apply Emerging Technology

We examine AI as it converges with robotics, embodied AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, spatial computing and technologies still over the horizon.

Build a Climate-Forward Future

We explore how technological progress can strengthen resilience, sustainability, biodiversity and the living systems people depend on.

How Horizon 2044 Works

Look far enough ahead to make better decisions now.

Horizon 2044 does not try to predict one fixed future. We research emerging signals, examine plausible futures, convene people across disciplines and translate foresight into practical questions, frameworks, experiments and recommendations.

The goal is to help leaders, communities and institutions act earlier, while there is still time to influence the systems the next generation will inherit.

We have one generation.

The children who will enter adulthood in 2044 are being born now.

The technologies that will shape their lives are being built now.

The policies, educational systems, businesses and institutions they will inherit are being designed now.

The future is not waiting until 2044. We are building it today.
